Team Description
At Chalmers University of Technology in Goteborg, Sweden, the research group for dynamics at the Department of Applied Mechanics has a long tradition at working with wave propagation and scattering in elastic media. The main application has been to ultrasonic nondestructive testing and in particular a lot of modelling and development of computer software have been done for typical situations in the nuclear power industry during the last 15 years. This has concerned the scattering by defects, modelling of ultrasonic probes in transmission and reception, and calibration. Much work has been devoted to treat the scattering by simply shaped cracks in various situations by in 3D, both for isotropic and anisotropic media. Boundary integral equation (BIE) techniques have been applied for this purpose, but in contrast to a general boundary element approach (BEM), the unknown surface fields (crack-opening-displacements in this case) is expanded in orthogonal complete sets on the surface, which also include the correct edge conditions. It is noted that this approach is only valid for simply shaped cracks, but then yields very accurate and efficient numerical schemes.
